Whale Stranding Infographics on the Indian Coastline

CMFRI (Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute) brings out the Whale Stranding Infographics on the Indian Coastline. All the 113 incidents recorded since the year 1871. Also knows as beaching is a situation where marine mammal run ground and often found dead or alive on the beaches. There could be many reasons for such incidents from Parasite infestation to Pollution exposure. This not something which has started in recent time this has been happening for a very long time.

Indian coastal line covers more than 7516 km in total. Which has a composition of sandy beaches, muddy flats, rocky coasts and marshy land. India has habitats on both side Bay of Bengal on the east and Arabian Sea on the west which provide great living conditions for these large creatures. And yet we find some whale stranding on the coastline.

Most of the reason why this happens is unknown but some of the identified reasons are Disease, Parasite infestation, Harmful algal blooms, Injuries due to ship strikes, Fishery entanglements, Pollution exposure, Trauma, Starvation and Weather or Oceanographic events.
