My Aquarium with some Toxic Corals

Toxic Corals Yes this hobby does come with BE CAREFUL TAG, keeping a marine aquarium is such a hobby which does has some dark sides to it like some popular coral carry a powerful toxin, which can give you shortness of breath, flu-like symptoms, coughing or even high fever.

Well, culprit are the Zoanthid sp. beautiful colourful polyp.. and some other species of these corals. Which are increasingly used in a marine aquarium setups because of their bright colors and overall hardiness These are well known to release toxins when stressed.

There have been events reported that one entire family in England were poisoned when the coral was scraped off from a rock while cleaning the tank. The family suffered from fevers and coughing and also spent a few hours in the hospital.

Toxic Coral are live creatures and like all other creatures, it will defend itself. The Toxin which they release is known as palytoxin.

Most of the case the first coral introduced in our tanks is a beautiful colony of colorful polyp, We need to be aware what are we adding in the tank and if you don’t know then take some precautions don’t touch them with open cuts or wound, always wash your hands after touching them, wearing gloves and goggles cutting them and if you feel some sort of allergy, consult with your physician.
