Chrysiptera uswanasi, the New Damselfish from Papua
Chrysiptera uswanasi is another new beautiful damselfish from the Fakfak Peninsula of New Guinea (West Papua Province, Indonesia). The family Pomacentridae is growing bigger. The juvenile is metallic blue on the head with greenish yellow grading towards the back and covered with numerous small blue or greenish spots. The adult differs from the juvenile lacking in the bright blue color on the head.
Chrysiptera uswanasi has some very closely related similar looking damselfish from the C. oxycephala species complex and the difference in them can be very hard to find. The structure of the body look very similar to Chrysiptera uswanasi. The juvenile have some color variation and just so similar in looks.
It is said that the evolution of the C. oxycephala species complex could to be associated with the zone of tectonic activity along the boundary of the Pacific and Australian plates. The specimens are deposited at the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense, Cibinong, Java, Indonesia (MZB) and the Western Australian Museum, Perth, Australia (WAM).
