Corals Halt Infrastructure Project Worth $14 Billion in Mumbai
In India, most of the corals are listed under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972. This Tuesday in Mumbai, the high court passed the judgement to halt the activities on Mumbai Coastal Road project from Kandivli to Marine Drive worth 14,000/- crores. This project includes a 6-8 lane highway by means of land reclamation from the sea.
There are 11 coral species and 350 other marine life species reported from the city shores. Now the project developers have to get clearance from the environment authorities. Petitions were filed by activists, residents and fishermen from the city challenging the project sanity and against Wildlife (Protection) Act. This project will not only damage the marine life but also is an irreversible change to the ecosystem.
