After ISRO’s launch to the moon, India is set to launch its Deep Sea Missions. The central government has allocated 8000 crores to explore the deepest part of the oceans surrounding. The major focus of the mission is to look for metals and minerals and for this United Nation’s International Seabed Authority (ISBA) has allotted to India a site of 75,000 sq. km in the Central Indian Ocean.
Currently, there are only five major players in the Deep Sea exploration i.e. US, Russia, China, France and Japan. India will be joining the club soon. National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences is designing and developing the underwater manned submersible. Whereas the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is designing and fabricating human crew module with titanium alloys.
In the beginning, the Deep Ocean Missions is for mining resources but other research organisation will join in for conducting studies on climate change, marine life, and ocean surveys and exploration. The fabrication of the entire maned underwater craft is expected to be completed by the year 2022 and we will be an eye on the new developments. [NIOT]
